What a Sound, Science-Based Skincare Routine Really Looks Like
Modern skincare isn’t about using more products — it’s about using the right actives at the right time, in a way that works with skin biology, not against it.A scientifically sound routine is built around two core skin functions:
- Protection during the day
- Repair and renewal at night
Everything else is secondary.
- Daytime Routine
- Night Time Routine
- Overall Care
Daytime Skincare: Protection Comes First
What your skin faces every day. From the moment you wake up, your skin is exposed to
- UV radiation
- Air pollution
- Blue light
- Environmental oxidative stress
These factors generate free radicals unstable molecules that
- Break down collagen
- Trigger pigmentation
- Accelerate visible ageing
This damage happens during the day, not at night.
The scientific role of daytime actives
Daytime skincare should focus on
- Neutralising free radicals
- Supporting collagen integrity
- Enhancing the performance of sunscreen
This is where antioxidants are essential.
Why Vitamin C belongs in the morning
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is one of the most researched antioxidants in dermatology. When formulated correctly, it:
- Neutralises reactive oxygen species
- Helps preserve collagen during UV exposure
- Reduces oxidative triggers of uneven skin tone
When used in the morning, vitamin C:
- Works during environmental exposure
- Complements sunscreen rather than replacing it
- Provides protection exactly when skin needs it most
This is why our Vitamin C Range is designed specifically for daytime use.
Nighttime Skincare: Repair, Renewal, Support
What skin does at night
At night, skin biology shifts.
Instead of defending against the environment, skin focuses on:
- Barrier repair
- Cellular renewal
- Inflammation control
- Recovery from daytime stress
This is when skin responds best to gentle, non-acidic actives that support natural repair mechanisms.
Why not antioxidants at night?
While antioxidants are valuable, high-activity, low-pH systems are not always ideal during the skin’s repair phase.
Nighttime skincare should:
- Avoid unnecessary irritation
- Support barrier lipids
- Encourage renewal without overstimulation
This is where retinoid-like actives without irritation excel.
Why Bakuchiol is ideal for nighttime use
Bakuchiol is a plant-derived active that:
- Supports collagen production
- Improves texture and tone
- Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines
- Does not cause the irritation commonly associated with retinoids
Unlike traditional retinol:
- It is stable at skin-friendly pH
- It does not increase photosensitivity
- It supports repair without disrupting the barrier
This makes bakuchiol ideal for nighttime renewal, which is why our Bakuchiol Range is formulated for evening use.
Nighttime is for skin repair and renewal. Our Bakuchiol-based serums work alongside key barrier-reinforcing ingredients like niacinamide, peptides, and hyaluronic acid to support collagen, hydration, and even tone — all while you sleep.
Daily Skincare Routine
🌅 Morning (AM)
1. Cleanse
Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to remove oil and impurities without disrupting the skin barrier.
✔ Avoid harsh sulfates in the morning.
2. Treat (Antioxidant Serum)
Apply a Vitamin C serum to protect against environmental damage, brighten skin tone, and support collagen production.
✔ Ideal actives: Vitamin C, Ferulic Acid, Vitamin E.
3. Hydrate
Use a lightweight hydrating serum or gel to replenish moisture and support skin elasticity.
✔ Ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin are ideal.
4. Moisturise
Apply a daily moisturiser suited to your skin type to lock in hydration and maintain barrier function.
5. Sun Protection (Essential)
Finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
✔ This is the most important anti-aging step.
🌙 Evening (PM)
1. Cleanse
Cleanse thoroughly to remove sunscreen, makeup, oil, and pollution.
✔ Double cleanse if wearing heavy makeup or sunscreen.
2. Treat (Targeted Actives)
Apply treatment products based on your skin goals:
Brightening / Anti-aging: Retinoids or Bakuchiol
Uneven tone / Pigmentation: Vitamin C derivatives, azelaic acid, or exfoliating acids
Acne-prone skin: Niacinamide, salicylic acid (on alternate nights)
3. Hydrate
Reapply a hydrating serum to restore moisture lost during the day.
4. Moisturise / Repair
Use a richer night moisturiser to support skin repair while you sleep.
🧪 Weekly Treatments (1–3× per week)
Exfoliation
Use a chemical exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and improve texture.
✔ AHAs for dull or dry skin
✔ BHAs for oily or acne-prone skin
✔ Do not exfoliate on the same night as strong retinoids.
Mask (Optional)
Hydrating or calming masks can be used weekly for an added boost.
